KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The first season of the women’s IPL will take place early next year.
  • Five teams are expected to take part in the first season of the women’s competition.
  • According to a report, BCCI is likely to go ahead with a draft process for players in the inaugural season.
The BCCI on Tuesday (October 18) after its Annual General Meeting (AGM) officially confirmed that the inaugural edition of the Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) will take place next year. The tournament is expected to start after the end of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, which will take place from February 10 to 26 in South Africa.
It was reported last week that in the first season of WIPL, five teams will take part and 20 matches will take place that will be played across two venues. And now, according to a new report on Cricbuzz on Wednesday, it has been revealed that in the first season of the women’s competition, unlike the player auctions in the men’s tournament, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to go ahead with a draft process for the players.
An open bidding process is in the plans for the team auctions, which is expected to take place by the end of 2022. At least six of the existing 10 IPL franchises have shown an initial interest in buying a WIPL team. However, they are unlikely to get the first rights to pick a team, and might have to be a part of the open bidding process alongside new interested parties.

The BCCI expects 60 Indian players to be picked for the tournament set to begin in March 2023. The number has been derived by special research on the availability of quality players in the domestic set-up.

According to the updates available till date, in the first season of women’s IPL, five overseas players will be allowed to feature in the playing XI, but out of those five, only four can be from the member nations and one has to be from an associate country. Each team can make up a squad of 18 players, which includes six overseas signings.
