We have had 42 completed matches in IPL 2023 so far, till the afternoon of May 1. For the first time in IPL history the match runs aggregate has breached the 400 run mark as many as 10 times.
That though is not the only mind boggling statistic that IPL 2023 has thrown up.
TimesofIndia.com here brings you a comprehensive list of the most interesting stats of the 16th edition of the IPL, so far:
# For the first time in the history of the IPL, 800-plus runs were scored in one day, comprising two matches – Chennai 200/4 & Punjab 201/6 at Chepauk, Chennai and Rajasthan 212/7 & Mumbai Indians 214/4 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai – both contested on April 30.
# Also, for the first time, four totals of 200-plus have been recorded in a single day’s play and both the matches resulted in wins for the chasing sides.
# Nine matches in this edition have witnessed totals of 200-plus from both the teams in the same match – an all-time record in the IPL, outstripping the five in 2022.
# Ten times in this edition, a match aggregate of 400-plus has been witnessed – another first in the history of the IPL.
# Interestingly, the top four match-aggregates in this edition have witnessed eight different teams. 458 for 15 between Punjab Kings & Super Giants at Mohali on April 28; 444 for 14 between RCB & Super Kings at Bengaluru on April 17; 433 for 11 between KKR & Sunrisers at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on April 14 and 426 for 11 between Rajasthan Royals & Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 30.
# The match aggregate of 458 for the loss of 15 wickets between Lucknow Super Giants (257/5) and Punjab Kings (201) is the third highest in the IPL – the highest being 469 for the loss of ten wickets between Chennai Super Kings (246/5) and Rajasthan Royals (223/5) at Chennai on April 3, 2010.
# Mumbai Indians’s 214 for four vs Rajasthan Royals on April 30 has provided the first instance of a team chasing a total of 200-plus at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
# Lucknow Super Giants (257/5 vs Punjab Kings at Mohali on April 28, 2023) have become the second team to produce a total of 250-plus in the IPL – the first being Royal Challengers Bangalore – 263 for five vs Pune Warriors at Bengaluru on April 23, 2013.
# Twenty four totals of 200-plus have been recorded in this IPL, setting an IPL record, outstripping the 18 in 2022.
# Lucknow’s aforementioned total is now the highest score without an individual century in the IPL.
# Faf du Plessis has taken 317 innings to complete his 9000 runs in Twenty20 – the ninth quickest in this format. The three quickest being Babar Azam (245 innings), Chris Gayle (249) and Virat Kohli (271).
# Nine bowlers were used by Lucknow Super Giants in Punjab Kings’ innings at Mohali on April 28, emulating an IPL record. RCB was the first team to use nine bowlers in an IPL innings – vs Gujarat Lions at Bengaluru on May 14, 2016.
# Sixteen bowlers were utilised in the Lucknow Super Giants (nine) vs Punjab Kings’ (seven) match at Mohali on April 28, emulating an IPL record. Sixteen bowlers were used in the RCB vs Gujarat Lions match at Bengaluru on May 14, 2016.
# Forty one boundaries (27 fours & 14 sixes) were hit in Lucknow’s innings – the second highest tally in the IPL behind the 42 (21 fours & 21 sixes) for RCB vs Pune Warriors at Bengaluru on April 23, 2013.
# Sixty seven boundaries – Lucknow (41) and Punjab (26) – were hit at Mohali on April 28. Only once more boundaries were recorded in an IPL match – 69 between Chennai (36) and Rajasthan (33) at Chepauk, Chennai on April 3, 2010.

# Virat Kohli has earned the dubious distinction of being dismissed off the first ball of a match for the second time in the IPL – vs Rajasthan Royals at Bengaluru on April 23 – his previous instance being against Sunrisers at Wankhede Stadium on May 8, 2022. He joined Brendon McCullum, Jacques Kallis, Parthiv Patel & Mayank Aggarwal, who had previously got out twice off the first ball of the match.

# Marsh has become just the second all-rounder to register a fifty and produce a four-wicket haul in a losing cause in an IPL match. Yuvraj’s both instances went in vain – 83 & 4 for 35 for RCB vs Rajasthan at Bengaluru on May 11, 2014 and 66 & 4 for 29 vs vs Delhi at DYP, Mumbai on April 17, 2011.
