Defending champions Gujarat Titans beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 7 wickets in Match No. 39 of the IPL 2023, which took place at the Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata on Saturday (April 29), to reach No. 1 position in the IPL 2023 points table. The Hardik Pandya-led side chased down the target of 180 runs in 17.5 overs for the loss of just three wickets. The win in front of a jam-packed crowd at Kolkata’s iconic stadium was GT’s sixth success in eight matches so far this season, and with a total of 12 points, they are closing in on securing a place in the playoffs for the second year in a row.
In a big run chase, Shubman Gill, who was part of the KKR set-up for four years before joining GT in the IPL 2022 mega auction last year, scored 49 runs from 35 balls, and then all-rounder Vijay Shankar (51 not out from 24 balls) joined hands with evergreen David Miller (unbeaten 32 off 18 balls) to take the side past the finish line.
Gill, who added 41 runs for the first wicket with local boy Wriddhiman Saha and 50 with skipper Hardik Pandya (26), for the second, was unlucky to miss out on his second back-to-back fifty. He was sent back to the dugout by Sunil Narine after Andre Russell completed his catch when he tried to take an aerial route. During his stay at the crease, Gill hammered eight fours.
After the conclusion of the KKR-GT IPL 2023 match, Shubman took to Instagram to share three pictures from the game, and his Instagram post went viral on the internet because of the caption that he used. The 23-year-old batter, who has scored a total of 333 runs (joint second highest) in eight matches played so far this year, wrote, “Day Riders.”
Many fans on social media platforms assumed that the young right-handed batter took a dig at his former side, KKR, via his post. Shubman represented KKR for four years, but he was not retained by the franchise, following which he joined the GT side last year.
And as Gill’s post was doing the rounds on the internet, Titans skipper and star Indian all-rounder Hardik also posted a hilarious comment on it that fueled rumours that the caption was aimed at Gill’s former IPL franchise.
GT’s next match in IPL 2023 is now against Delhi Capitals on Tuesday (May 2) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, whereas KKR will face SRH in Hyderabad on May 4.
