There’s an area on that pitch that’s very dry and the other end is full of grass so I think the spinners need to execute from that end in particular. It’s a new surface. Let’s do a little recap here, the last T20 match to be played here was the second T20I between India and New Zealand and the surface was so slow that the pitch curator ended up getting the sack. New Zealand were limited to a score of 99/8. Easy-peasy, one would think, for the hosts to chase that, well think differently. It actually looked like the Kiwis might actually defend the target if it wasn’t for Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav shutting up shop and putting up an unbeaten 31 off 32 balls for the fifth wicket. India chased down the target of 100 with six wickets and just one ball remaining. Captain Pandya said after the match that the pitch was a “shocker” and the curator later got a shocker on the mail saying that he has lost his job. The match was called a thriller by the BCCI’s own commentators and yet, the UPCA thought the curator who made that pitch should not have a job any more. Quite extraordinary, to put it lightly.

That’s the kind of spin Shane Warne used to generate and made batters look silly. A great innings from Mayers ends, made the conditions look much better for batting than it probably is.

He instead ends up nicely lobbing it to the fielder there, who is Khaleel, the way the fielding coach might lob balls up in the nets for the fielders to practice. It all happens in slow motion, the ball loops up, Khaleel underneath it, and it pops out of his hands. That is garbage that helps no one.

Importantly, the 22-yards is interesting because there’s very little grass at this end. It’s very bare and the ball may grip on this half. As I walk down, you can see the disparity. You get to the middle, you start seeing more grass, and it’s patchy as well. So it’s a pitch with contrasting halves. There’s so much more grass on one side, but it’s patchy grass. So when it hits the bald areas, it could hold. Hoping that the red soil makes the bounce and carry.”

Warner was one of the first, and few, foreign players to have come to their national selectors’ reckoning through the IPL. He made a splash in his early years playing for the Delhi Daredevils under the captaincy of Virender Sehwag. So good was he that he became the first Australian in 132 years to make his international debut without playing any first class cricket. He has since admitted that he followed the Sehwag playbook, which thus made him one of the first names on the team sheet for Australia in all formats, including Test cricket despite his aggressive approach to batting. He left the Daredevils and led Sunrisers Hyderabad to the IPL title in 2016. He was absolutely devastating as SRH captain, never scoring less than 500 runs between 2015 and 2020 but it all came to a rather unceremonious end in 2021 when he was stripped of his captaincy and axed from the team. He returned to Delhi, now called the Delhi Capitals and is now captain of the side with Pant sidelined. Talk about full circles.

Pant’s tweet brings us nicely to the impact player rule. In the match between PBKS and DC, Rishi Dhawan has been brought on as an impact player replacement for Bhanuka Rajapaksa. Yesterday, CSK brought on Tushar Deshpande as replacement for Ambati Rayudu so it is pretty clear that the teams batting first are using the rule to bring on an extra bowler. GT showed the other way the rule can be used, they didn’t have to bat with a batter less due to the injury to Kane Williamson. Not that Sai Sudharshan was expected to be an equal to the Kiwi great but the Indian did a very good job of holding up fort and was crucial to GT’s win.

While that in itself is sad, let us hope that he recovers well over the course of this tournament and this does not become the start of another injury saga for the former New Zealand captain. Williamson had recently gone on a century-scoring spree, even leading the Kiwis to a thrilling last ball win against Sri Lanka with an unbeaten ton which confirmed a WTC final spot for India. It is in Test cricket that players like Williamson become a true joy to watch and let’s hope that this knee issue doesn’t hinder his flow of runs any more.

Shaw marked his international debut with a Test century and both players made their ODI debuts in the same series. Two years later, Gill has all but established himself as India’s premier opener in all formats with Rohit Sharma by scoring centuries in Tests, ODIs and T20Is this year alone while Shaw seems to have fallen out of reckoning after a string of rather dismal performances while he played for India and for DC in the IPL. His off-field troubles did no favours either, However, Shaw has plundered runs in all formats in domestic cricket over the last year, can he do the same in the IPL this season and put his name back up there?

DC put all their wicketkeeping eggs in one basket and that basket was captain Rishabh Pant. Now it is practically impossible for anybody to be playing as a wicketkeeper ahead of Pant, unless the player is MS Dhoni which was the case in Pant’s early games with the Indian team. But DC could have done better than having players who have hardly ever kept wickets in their lives as backup. Now they have roped in Abhishek Porel, a largely unheralded name who had rather dismal returns with the bat in last year’s SMAT. Sarfaraz Khan is the other option they have but he is one of those who have never really kept wickets on a long term. It is likely that DC are going to have problems in this position. We could be wrong, of course, and Porel might turn out to be the find of the season, but let’s see.
