Punjab Kings bowlers were taken apart by the Lucknow Super Giants batters as the visitors amassed the second highest total in IPL history of 257 runs. While the pitch in Mohali was a belter, Punjab bowlers’ errors and waywardness didn’t help and Simon Doull slammed one of the international stars for his blunders.
A good pitch and some poor bowling – the Lucknow Super Giants batters utilised both factors on Friday, April 28, in Mohali and posted a mammoth score of 257 runs on the board. It began from Kyle Mayers at the top in the powerplay and it continued throughout the batting order as the likes of Ayush Badoni, Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran, came out and kept swinging and ultimately batted the Punjab Kings
out of the game. While the pitch was a belter, some erratic bowling didn’t help the Kings. There were freebies down the leg side, four no-balls were bowled and the Lucknow batters just feasted on them.
Out of the four no-balls, two were bowled by the debutant Gurnoor Singh Brar, who was substituted immediately after he bowled his third over of the innings while the remaining two were bowled by the star pacer Kagiso Rabada
. While Rabada did dismiss both the Lucknow openers, including skipper KL Rahul and dangerous Mayers, however, he did overstep a couple of times and paid the price for it, as it was dispatched for boundaries both times.
No-ball, which is considered unacceptable as it’s controllable, especially in the T20 format, can cost teams games and can really hurt in crunch matches when the margins are negligible. Former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull
, who was on commentary slammed Rabada saying that he is an international bowler and it wasn’t the first time that he did that as he is constantly landing very close to the line.
“This is unacceptable behaviour. You’re an international bowler. He’s pushing it all the time, even when he is behind he is just there by an inch,” Doull said on air.
Rabada finished with figures of 2/52 and not just him, except for leg-spinner Rahul Chahar, every single bowler went the distance. The Kings tried their best and scored 201 runs riding on Atharva Taide’s 66-run knock, but the 257-run mountain was too steep to climb.
