Mithal Raj has hinted at becoming an owner in the 2022 Women’s IPL

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mithali Raj could play the 2023 season of the Women’s IPL
  • Mithali hinted that she could own one of the franchises
  • The ex-India captain announced her retirement from international cricket this year
The burning question ahead of the inaugural season of the Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) is whether Indian women’s cricket legend Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami will take part in the franchise -based league. The legendary duo retired from international cricket earlier this year after being the flag bearers of the sport in the country for two decades.

Despite saying goodbye to the national team; both players have not ruled out the possibility of making a comeback to the sport for the Women’s IPL.In fact, Mithali dropped a major bombshell and has hinted at possibly owning a team in T20 cricket extravaganza.

“Maybe, yes,” said Mithali in an interaction with news agency PTI on being asked about the possibility of buying a team. Mithali stated that she has kept her options to be part of the tournament in some way whether it be a player or even as a mentor but is awaiting more details on the tournament.

“I am keeping that role open, whether as a player or in a franchise in some way as a mentor. “But right now, nothing is clear, there are five teams…how they are going to do, whether it’s a bidding or auction, so until there is some concrete information, I am keeping pretty much all things open,” the former India captain added.

Mithali made her commentary debut at the ongoing 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup. “I am watching cricket from a very different optics. I still do feel the nerves if it’s a tight game. I still have to cross that barrier of not feeling those emotions of a player. I am just testing the waters if I am apt for commentary. Maybe after a few months, I will see if I still have keenness to pursue it,” said Mithali on her role.

Talking about the Women’s IPL, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) approved the tournament in a historic decision at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) last month in Mumbai.
